LeClaire police department working to make city less noisy

The LeClaire Police Department released a video on Facebook that’s generating a lot of controversy.
The department will be cracking down on excessive noise from motor vehicles.
That includes defective mufflers and exhaust pipes.
During the summer months they receive noise complaints about loud vehicles driving through the city.
“Noise has been an ongoing issue in the city of LeClaire for many years and as our traffic counts increase every year the noise problem continues to increase and becomes more frequent,” said police chief Shane Themas.
Themas said it’s important to keep the needs of their citizens a top priority.
“We work for the citizens of LeClaire and we have a lot of different facets of our job,” Themas said. “One of which is the quality of life for the citizens and when noise becomes a problem, it does effect their quality of life and their peace and quiet,” said Themas.
The Facebook video generated over 5,000 views with over 50 shares.
“It’s not a specific vehicle,” Themas said. “It can be motorcycles, it can be a passenger car, a truck with a muffler that’s defective, semis using their engine brake or Jake brakes,” he said.
“It’s very important to remember that the city of LeClaire lies near the river and the sound tends to echo from buildings to trees and the river and back again,” said officer Adam Thomas
“The state code of Iowa regarding muffler and baffle systems reads that every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a working muffler system to prevent excessive noise and smoke,” he said.
So far this year the department has made several stops and encounters to reinforce the important of complying with the state code and city ordinance.
